Frankie Say relax T-shirt History
The controversial lyrics of “Relax” and its provocative video made the song an instant sensation. At the time, the BBC banned the song, which only served to fuel its popularity. The band’s manager, Paul Morley of ZTT Records, saw an opportunity to capitalise on the controversy and came up with a marketing campaign that would change the fashion landscape – the “Frankie Say Relax” T-shirt.
The genius behind this campaign lay in its ambiguity; it was unclear what “Frankie Say Relax” actually meant, inviting speculation and curiosity. This mystery contributed to the shirts’ allure, and people couldn’t resist donning them.
The official T-shirts included the Frankie Goes To Hollywood logo. However, cheaper bootlegged Tees started to appear in their droves, and were printed as “Frankie Says Relax” to avoid copyright infringement.
The legacy of the “Frankie Says Relax” T-shirts endures. They are remembered as a quintessential item of 1980s fshion and have become collectors’ items. In recent years, there has been a revival of interest in the shirts, with fashion enthusiasts and nostalgia seekers bringing them back into style. Some contemporary designers have even created their own versions, paying homage to the original design.
What does “Frankie Say relax” mean?
The answer is for over 18’s only and is rather explicit. In the song “Relax” by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, the lyrics tell us to “Relax, don’t do it, when you want to cum”. The band are basically telling us to delay ejaculation during sex for prolonged enjoyment. However, many people who bought the T-shirts at the height of their populairity in 1984, were unaware of the lyrics true meaning.
